Game Release: Kung Pow Chicken – Enter the Dragon Bowl

Friends, I’m so excited to release my first platforming game for the Gameboy!

Made in GB Studio version 3.1.0 and the compatible version of Platformer Plus, this project was started over two years ago (shortly after my last Gameboy project was finished), and went through loads of changes and updates along the way. My kids came up with the Kung Pow Chicken character in some doodles one day, we expanded on the story together, and my son actually designed some of the enemy sprites for the game!

The game is a love letter to my first and favorite Gameboy game: Kirby’s Dreamland. Light, cute, designed to challenge, but not be punishing. There’s no “Game Over” state in Kung Pow Chicken, but reaching certain achievements will change the end state of the game (not saying anything further on that).

More details on the game contents below. Links to itch.io page and direct download of ROM near the end.

Here’s the Trailer

Story Overview

While out enjoying a fresh summer morning, Pecky Cluckenbawker stumbles upon some rice emitting a strange and powerful energy. Her mom identifies it as a special ingredient to the dish of ultimate power, The Dragon Bowl! As she is speaking, none other than the dreaded Fox Pirate shows up, demanding this meal, and taking Pecky’s mom captive as collateral.

What will Pecky do?!

Grab a spatula, become The Kung Pow Chicken, and save the day!

Friends

Henrietta Cluckenbawker: Pecky’s mom. She needs help.

Super Hamster: Pecky’s best friend. He’s ready to play!

Plat-apillar: Minding their own business, but they don’t mind if you come along for a ride.

Enemies

Worm: It’s best to avoid these when Pecky is unarmed.

Brock Lee (Designed by Theodore): Vitamin B for Buh-gawk!

Lil Mel (Designed by Theodore): Speedy and seedy.

Mel: His roll attack is quite a smash.

Throw-tato (Designed by Theodore): Look out for that fastball!

Fight Flower: Platforms or hazards? Yes.

Bee: Double-tap these critters to stop them for good.

Queen Bee: She somehow got a hold of some rather large shuriken. Return them to sender.

Peanut Butter and Jellyfish: The underwater menace.

ARRRinj (Concept by Theodore): The crew of Fox Pirate’s ship. Their double-edged swords pack a punch.

Fox Pirate: This crafty fox will sneak up on you. Beware his cannons when he’s feeling weak.

ROM File

Click the Download link for a zip file containing the Kung Pow Chicken – Enter the Dragon Bowl ROM. This can be played on a Gameboy emulator, or a flash cart on original hardware.

The game is also available for download or play in-browser on my itch.io page.

As with my last game release, I got a few 512KB Flash Carts from Inside Gadgets, and my nephew Noah created some beautiful cartridge and “box” artwork (“box” artwork the first image, cartridge labels printed with stickeryou.com) for an extremely limited release to a few friends and family. You might notice that the ROM is actually 1024KB… I may have purchased the flash carts a scootch prematurely. The game is the same in both versions, but the ones that I flashed to cartridges have color mode turned off.
